RAF flies to the rescue

Raf Roberts takes the honours AGAIN! at a sunny Shirley Park GC in Major No. 2…….

ACGA Event Recap – Shirley Park Golf Club | Friday 9th May 2025

On Friday, May 9th, 2025, the African Caribbean Golf Association (ACGA) returned in fine form with its second major of the season at the ever-popular Shirley Park Golf Club. Nestled in the heart of Croydon, the course offered an engaging mix of lush fairways, subtle elevation changes, and challenging greens that provided the perfect canvas for a day of friendly rivalry and exceptional golf.

The day belonged to Raf Roberts, who delivered a composed and commanding performance to claim his second ACGA major title in as many years. Having already made his mark at Winterhill in 2024, Raf showed once again why he’s considered one of the most consistent and focused competitors in the association. With metronomic precision off the tee and an assured touch on the greens, Raf’s round was a lesson in concentration and consistency, ultimately securing him the top spot.

However, it wasn’t all plain sailing. Hot on his heels was the ever graceful Elaine Brown, who secured a very well-earned second place with a strong, confident round that kept her in contention throughout. In third place was the Randy Plowright, who survived WormGate on the 17th hole to finish clear of Lynette Mapp, who seems to be returning to form, whose steady approach and strategic mindset served her well on a tricky layout.

In keeping with ACGA tradition, the day was about more than the leaderboard. It was a chance to reconnect, compete, and welcome new and familiar faces. The event was delighted to host a number of distinguished guests, including Selwyn Protein, Leo Faure, Lloyd Allen, Jessica Sandy and Errol McCollin. Their presence added extra warmth and style to an already buzzing field, and we look forward to seeing more of them in future events.

As always, Shirley Park provided a first-class experience, with beautifully kept greens and welcoming staff who helped make the day run smoothly. The post-round gathering, full of light-hearted stories and shared respect, once again highlighted what makes the ACGA special: a community bound by love for the game and mutual encouragement both on and off the course.

Looking ahead, attention now turns to the next event at Redlibbets Golf Club on Friday, June 6th, where competition will no doubt intensify as the season progresses. With players like Raf Roberts setting a high bar and a field packed with ambition and talent, the race for year-end honours promises plenty of excitement.

Congratulations once again to our winner, Raf Roberts, and to everyone who contributed to a memorable day. See you at Redlibbets!
